How Much Does Commission-Free Online Ordering Actually Cost?

“Commission-free” is the pitch every direct online ordering platform leads with, but ask what the monthly bill actually looks like and three of the four biggest names in the category won’t tell you without a sales call. That gap between the marketing and the invoice is worth knowing before you request a demo.
What Each Provider Actually Discloses
Checking each provider’s own published pricing directly, rather than their marketing copy, turns up a striking pattern:
- ChowNow: 0% per-order commission, confirmed. The monthly subscription amount, setup fee, and contract length are not published anywhere on their site — you only get a number after talking to sales, and reviewers who cover this space explicitly warn to “confirm current ChowNow pricing directly, as plans change.”
- Popmenu: Reported by independent pricing trackers to run roughly $200/month at the entry tier and $400/month or more at higher tiers, which bundle a website and marketing automation in with ordering — but Popmenu’s own pricing is quote-based, and a separate setup fee exists that “isn’t published.”
- Beyond Menu: No pricing information published at all. Their own FAQ directs restaurants straight to a demo request form.
- Owner.com: The one provider that publishes real numbers. A Flexible plan at $249/month plus a 5% restaurant-side fee per order, or a Flat Rate plan at $499/month with no additional per-order fee. Both plans add a 5% customer-facing order support fee at checkout, plus a roughly $1,000 one-time setup fee ($299 for each additional location). Billing is month-to-month with no long-term contract.
Why “Commission-Free” Doesn’t Mean the Same Thing at Each Provider
Owner.com’s own naming is instructive: even its “commission-free” plan carries a 5% restaurant-side fee per order under the Flexible tier — the marketing avoids the word “commission,” but the mechanics are the same percentage-of-order-value charge that direct ordering is supposed to eliminate. Only the flat-fee alternative removes it entirely, at a higher fixed monthly cost. This is the same trade-off covered from the marketplace side in online ordering vs. delivery apps: a percentage fee scales with your volume, a flat fee doesn’t, and which one costs less depends entirely on how many orders you actually process.
Why This Matters Before You Request a Demo
A sales call for a platform with undisclosed pricing is not a neutral information-gathering step — it’s the point where a restaurant with no comparison numbers in hand negotiates from a weaker position. Getting Owner.com’s actual published numbers in front of you first gives a real anchor point to evaluate what ChowNow or Popmenu quote you, even though neither publishes its own baseline.
What This Doesn’t Tell You
None of these figures say anything about how long each platform actually takes to set up, or what the checkout experience is like for your customers — that requires using each platform directly, not reading its pricing page, and remains open until that testing happens. For the technical side of getting whichever platform you choose actually working on your own site without losing conversion data, see embedding an online ordering widget without losing attribution.
